European PROGRES Wins UNOPS Award for Serbia

evropski_progres - logoThe European PROGRES development programme, financed by the European Union and the Government of Switzerland, won the internal award by the United Nations Office of Project Services (UNOPS) – “Project of the Year 2018”. This project provided support for the development of 34 local self-governments in the south of Serbia.

The annual award is presented to the project that has shown the highest level of management know-how and achieved visible results. The European PROGRES was implemented by the UNOPS Office in Serbia in partnership with the Ministry of European Integration and towns and municipalities, implemented during 2014-2018.

During its four years the European PROGRES implemented 254 projects contributing to positive changes in society, improved local administration, competitiveness of the local economy and improved living conditions for all citizens, says the Head of the UNOPS Office in Serbia Michela Telatin.

“700 new jobs and 96 new enterprises were created, a contribution was provided to attracting investments for economic and social projects with values exceeding EUR 10 million and to improving social inclusion through improvements to the social and economic status of more than 9,000 people from vulnerable groups”, she says.

The EU continues its support to businesses in local communities with EUR 25 million through the EU PRO programme aiming to contribute to the creation of conditions for attracting new investments and creating jobs, increased competitiveness of companies, improved work of local self-governments and improvement of social inclusion.

The Government of Switzerland, through the Swiss PRO programme, is supporting the improvement of good governance and social inclusion and improvements to the quality of life of the population, particularly those belonging to vulnerable groups, with EUR 5.8 million.
