Zorana Mihajlović: One in Two Women in Serbia Suffer Some Form of Violence

punch - ilustracijaOne in two women in Serbia suffer some form of violence, and the deputy Prime Minister of the Government of Serbia Zorana Mihajlović said that the Government will work on amendments to the laws, aid to Safe Houses and education, as well as the economic empowerment of women. The Government of Serbia takes violence against women seriously, says Mihajlović, and therefore it formed a special Coordination Body for Gender Equality.

“When talking about violence against women, we need to seriously talk about gender equality, how to empower women, make them independent, at times when they have a problem to help them resolve that problem”, emphasized Mihajlović at the event dedicated to the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women at the Tanjug Press Center. She added that violence against women is not only the victim’s problem, but also a social problem, and that it needs to be resolved jointly by all. The coordination body will, she clarified, consist of several committees, with one being the Committee for Combating Violence against Women.

She added that the Coordination Body wishes to cooperate with the Women’s Parliamentary Network, the civil sector, European agencies, as well as the UN agency. The goal is, as she says, to make Serbia into a country where one cannot say that nearly 52% of women suffer some form of violence – essentially, that every other woman suffers some form of violence.

“We will work on creating the conditions in the legislative part, to help Safe Houses, in education, empowerment”, said Mihajlović and added that one of the committees in the Coordination Body will be women in entrepreneurship.
