The Minister of Education, Science and Technological Development of the Government of the Republic of Serbia Mladen Šarčević confirmed on 2 April that as of 1 September there will be 10,000 digital classrooms in schools. In a statement for the Tanjug news agency on the occasion of the Second Digital Summit of the Western Balkans, Šarčević said that in under two years this will establish a completely digitalized educational system, representing the fastest introduction of digitalization in education in Europe.
The Minister noted that by the start of the new school year first-graders in all primary schools will have digital textbooks, as will students of the second, fifth and sixth grade in 500 large schools.
He says that 2,000 digital classrooms have been equipped to date, preceded by computer science classrooms, since the subject became mandatory for fifth grade. The Minister announced that a public procurement will be issued in the coming days for the next 8,000 digital classrooms, a great step forward.
The Second Digital Summit of the Western Balkans, gathering 3,000 participants from 30 countries in the region, Europe and the world for two days, started on 4 April in Belgrade. The event is attended by the ministers for information society and digital agenda from the region, representatives of the European Commission, the IT industry and businesses from the region and world, along with representatives of start-ups.
