The European Union (EU) commits efforts to improving the status of vulnerable groups in member states, as well as states encompassed by the EU enlargement policy. The Europe 2020 strategy, as the key strategic document of the EU, contains a large number of guidelines for achieving smart, sustainable and inclusive growth, relevant for all countries aiming to become EU member states that face challenges such as poverty and social exclusion.

The Social Inclusion and Poverty Reduction Unit is a participant in activities held under the Open Method of Coordination in the field of social welfare and social inclusion, coordinating the implementation of the social aspect of the Europe 2020 strategy. Furthermore, representatives of the Unit are participating in the relevant negotiation groups as part of the EU accession process, and provide support in the drafting of strategic and other important documents promoting progress in this process.
