On 11 July, the Director of the Office for Human and Minority Rights Suzana Paunović met with the representatives of the expert mission of the European Commission in order to exchange information on measures taken with regard to the social inclusion of the Roma community in Serbia.
On this occasion, Mrs Paunović highlighted that Roma inclusion was one of the top priorities of the Serbian Government and that a solid legislative and strategic framework was established in this area.
She added that Serbia fulfilled the requirements set by the EU accession negotiation process, as well as the ones it acquired with regard to the implementation of operational conclusions, agreed at European Commission seminars, which started in 2011.
Furthermore, she highlighted that, by adopting the Strategy for Social Inclusion of Roma in the Republic of Serbia until 2025, Serbian Government demonstrated a clear commitment to dealing with Roma inclusion issues in a comprehensive manner.
She said that the new Strategy and the accompanying Action Plan recognised local self-governments as the main actors, adding that in the coming period the aim of the Government was to focus more on strengthening the capacity of local self-governments to implement measures and allocate funds for the inclusion of Roma in the local community, which would be done in cooperation with the Standing Conference of Towns and Municipalities and the National Council of the Roma National Minority.
The meeting was attended by representatives of the National Council of the Roma National Minority, the Ministry of Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Affairs, the Social Inclusion and Poverty Reduction Unit, and the Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Serbia.
