Ana Živković, an English teacher from “Čegar” primary school, was selected the best educator at the Microsoft Conference in Toronto, which was attended by 300 educators from 83 countries.
For students of the “Čegar” primary school, every English language class represents a new adventure. Thanks to their English teacher Ana Živković, they had the opportunity to enjoy a virtual tour of the Yellowstone national park. The curator of the New Orleans World War II Museum used “Skype” to take them through their most important exhibits, and on top of that, they had the opportunity to see the animals at the Lisbon Zoo.
These were the reasons why Ana Živković was selected the most innovative educator at the Microsoft Conference “Global Education Exchange” held in Toronto and attended by 300 educators from 83 countries.
The school where Ana works has only two classrooms equipped with working internet connection, but this did not prevent her from enabling her students to talk with Fabien Cousteau, the grandchild of Jacques-Yves Cousteau, who was at that moment in an underwater laboratory on the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. For the last couple of months, Ana has been trying to find an astronaut willing to have a chat with her youngest students from Niš.
She has been slowly including her colleagues from school in her activities, especially those who teach foreign languages. After they finish a geography, biology or history lesson, Ana uses Skype to connect with other schools so students can use the English language to talk to other students about the things the learned in class. She added that there was a Microsoft database of institutions willing to participate in these types of programmes and activities. This way, every school has the opportunity to connect with educational or science institutions from all over the world. All they need is one computer, Internet connection, and enthusiasm.
