The director of the Office for Human and Minority Rights of the Government of the Republic of Serbia, Suzana Paunović, opened on 27 May the first session of the Advisory Board of the project “Creating Tolerance and Understanding Towards the LGBT Population in Serbian Society”.
The body consists of eight members from among representatives of state institutions with the right to vote, namely from the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Ministry of Labour, Employment, Veterans and Social Affairs and the Ministry of Culture and Information.
Likewise, members of the board are also representatives of the Ministry of the Interior, Ministry of Justice, Office for Cooperation with Civil Society and Social Inclusion and Poverty Reduction Unit.
The implementation of the above project is the competence of the Office for Human and Minority Rights, while the Board was constituted with the harmonization of joint goals and tasks of all nominated members.
Paunović emphasized that, in addition to contributions to the more efficient implementation of project activities, this body aims to show the importance of multisectoral cooperation at the state level aimed at giving attention and establishing a more productive dialogue on the issues, rights and status of LGBT persons.
The project activities will lead to an increase in the visibility of LGBT persons and the development of tolerance towards differences in Serbian society, and thereby to achieving the goals set out in the Action Plan of the Strategy for the Prevention and Protection from Discrimination, as well as the Action Plan representing part of negotiation chapter 23, she reminded.
