On 20 June, Commissioner for Protection of Equality Brankica Janković spoke at the opening ceremony of the two-day Advisory Meeting of the Union of Blind and Visually Impaired Women of Serbia, organised by the Serbian Blind Persons Union in Vrnjačka Banja.
Commissioner Janković reminded the participants that, judging from the number of complaints, persons with disabilities, besides women, were the most discriminated against group in Serbia, which was corroborated by the results of a research conducted by the Commissioner for Protection of Equality, which showed that citizens perceived this social group as the most vulnerable. According to Ms Janković, women with disabilities, most notably women and girls with mental disabilities, were at risk of multiple discrimination.
The Commissioner underlined the importance of cooperation with the civil sector and presented examples of how joint activities contributed to the overall improvement of the position of persons with disabilities.
In this way, Commissioner Janković concluded, possibilities were provided to persons with disabilities to become active members of the society on equal terms with the general population and then she invited all participants to contact the Commissioner for Protection of Equality in any concrete cases of discrimination.
