Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Serbia and President of the Coordination Body for Gender Equality Zorana Mihajlović stated on 31 May that the signing of the agreement on cooperation with the Ethno Network continues joint work on the empowerment of women, particularly those in villages.
Mihajlović, recalling that joint work started with the initiative “Let Us Employ a Thousand Women in Rural Areas”, told the representatives of the association that it is the job of the state to do its part so that they have the opportunity for development in the work they are doing.
The representative of the Ethno-Network CA Violeta Jovanović emphasized that the goal of the initiative is to raise public awareness on the status of women in villages, but also to help them develop and to make the job they are doing valued and paid. She also issued a call to other institutions to join this initiative, particularly the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, since traditional Serbian products should be part of protocol gifts in our embassies worldwide.
The representative of the UN Women agency Jelena Sekulić noted that women in villages are marginalized on multiple grounds, whether they are older or younger women, girls or women with disabilities.
The representative of the Swiss Programme for Cooperation Dragana Tar noted that this institution supports products with a geographic origin, since they are a unique resource and Serbia is one of the few countries in Europe that can boast of this.
The agreement on cooperation was signed in the Serbian salon of the Government of Serbia, provisioned based on the initiative of Mihajlović, with traditional Serbian products produced by women from villages, thus preserving our cultural heritage.
