Twelve Roma families received keys for their new apartments in the Orlovsko settlement in Belgrade, their construction financed with over 3.5 million euros by the European Union, with the City of Belgrade providing the land and infrastructure.
– I would like to thank the European Union Delegation, because without them something like this would be impossible. The City has provided the land and infrastructure, but the European Union Delegation has provided the money for the construction of homes, said Belgrade mayor Siniša Mali during the ceremony of presenting the keys.
Mali noted that the apartments were received by families coming from non-hygienic settlements in Belville and Gazela, as well as that this is the first group of a total of 170 families the City of Belgrade and the European Union will provide with adequate housing.
This is part of the project “Let Us Build a Home Together”, implemented by the City of Belgrade and the European Union Delegation, explained Mali, and announced that by the end of the year a total of 68 families will receive apartments.
The head of the European Union Delegation, Michael Davenport, said he is extremely pleased that the European Union had the opportunity to help improve the living conditions for one of the most vulnerable social communities in Serbia, the Roma. The European Union will continue providing support to improving the status of Roma and all other vulnerable communities, stated Davenport, congratulating the Roma families on their moving into the new apartments.
