As of 2016, women in the Republic of Serbia will be able to retire at the age of 61, with a minimum of 15 years of service. This pushes further the age limit and by 2023 retirement conditions for both men and women should be the equal, with the retirement age being 65 years of age. Presently, women in Serbia retire somewhat younger than women in most of the EU member states, while men fall within the European average.
Equalisation of conditions and increase of the age limit are a worldwide trend, mostly due to the population aging and its strain on the budget. The goal of the larger part of the European Union is to equalise men and women and reach the retirement age of 65 and 67 in the next decade and a half, in some cases, the equalisation will be achieved around 2040 and later.
