Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure Zorana Mihajlovic stated that the Bill on Equality between Women and Men that has been adopted today at a government session will enable that both genders have a fully equal position in all segments of society.
Mihajlovic, who is also Chairperson of the Coordinating body for gender equality, underlined that this legal solution provides for completely equal chances for economic development of women and men in Serbia.
She explained that from now on, it will be prohibited to ask a woman when applying for a job when she plans to have a child, or ask them to send a photograph.
Also, it will be prohibited to fire a woman only because she is pregnant.
Mihajlovic added that this law provides for equal participation of women and men in managing and supervisory bodies for education, science, culture, information and sport.
Also, international organisations (OSCE, the Council of Europe and regional institutions) will employ an equal number of male and female employees.
This legal solution should also enable prevention of violence against women, instead of only dealing with consequences, as it has been the case so far, she underlined and added that special protection is envisaged for disabled women, women in rural areas, single parents and victims of violence.
