In the period from 9 to 10 May 2019, the Belgrade Open School held a training on “Career guidance and counselling as a mechanism for preventing student dropout”. The training was held at the Belgrade hotel “Prague”, where teachers, psychologists and pedagogists from schools in Tutin, Lebanon, Novi Sad, Backa, Stara Pazova, Svilajnac, Bečej and Belgrade gathered.
The drop-out rate in Serbia in primary schools amounts to 8.5% (Labor Force Survey, RZS, 2015), the net enrollment rate in secondary schools is 89.2%, while the percentage of those who do not complete secondary school is around 10%. The Strategy for the Development of Education 2020 sets a strategic goal for the drop-out rate to be less than 5%. How can career guidance and counselling contribute to the prevention of student dropout is one of the questions that teachers tried to provide during their two-day training.
Tamara Stanojevic opened the training on behalf of the Belgrade Open School and presented legislative frameworks that define career guidance and counselling in our country to participants. Furthermore, through an interactive quiz, participants were acquainted with the traditional and contemporary concept of career and basic models of career guidance and counselling.
During two intense training days, with the leaders Bojana Jevtović from the Divac Foundation and Olja Jovanović from the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Belgrade, the participants had the opportunity to discuss the problem of dropout of students from the educational system and mechanisms of prevention through career guidance and counselling services. The first day of training was especially focused on understanding of the risk of dropping out and work with students from vulnerable groups, as well as on recognizing the signals and factors that lead to the dropout of students from the education system. During the second day, the participants continued with creative work, directly designing and planning career guidance and counselling activities that will be focused on preventing dropouts of students by schools.
The training was realized in the framework of the project Career guidance and counselling for better employability of young people – “KVIS na BIS V” with the financial support of the Solidar Suisse office in Serbia. It is accredited by the Institute for the Advancement of Education (number 33) and has 16 points.
