During the past five years in Serbia 130 healthcare institutions were accredited, with certificates for another 31 healthcare institutions having passed the accreditation process handed out during the ceremony held on 21 April.
Accredited healthcare institutions have better conditions and equipment, as well as enough staff, and based on this data accreditations are awarded for one, three or seven years, said the director of the Agency for the Accreditation of Healthcare Institutions Radoljupka Radosavljević.
According to her, the accreditation involves introducing procedures used for working with patients, aimed at improving the quality of healthcare.
“Accreditation means improved quality of healthcare for patients,” said Radosavljević, adding that among the 31 healthcare institutions having passed the accreditation process lasting one year, 21 received a three-year accreditation, and 10 the seven-year one.
Radosavljević explained that healthcare institutions in Serbia apply for the accreditation process voluntarily, and have to meet the national standards applied by the agency in assessing the work of healthcare institutions.
“This way we establish procedures used to protect both healthcare employees and patients,” says Radosavljević.
Assistant Minister of Health Predrag Sazdanović said at the ceremony for awarding certificates that Serbia needs daily improvements to the quality of healthcare services emphasizing the importance of quality control.
He lauded the fact that the private healthcare institutions also applied for the accreditation process, as well as the initiation of the procedure of accreditation in birth centres.
