On 24 August, the Minister of Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Affairs in the Government of the Republic of Serbia, Zoran Đorđević spoke with the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality Brankica Janković about the necessary amendments and supplements to the Anti-Discrimination Law, that would have to be implemented in order for it to comply with the European law.
The participants of the meeting agreed that these amendments, which are expected to be finished in November, would significantly improve the framework for the protection of citizens from discrimination.
The participants also discussed the improvement of the position of vulnerable groups, including Roma and persons with disabilities, since the majority of complaints received by the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality are made by members of these groups.
Furthermore, the participants agreed on the beginning of training for labour inspectors which would enable them to recognise cases of discrimination and to respond to them. The training will be held starting from October in four Serbian cities – Belgrade, Niš, Novi Sad, and Kragujevac.
During the meeting there was also a discussion about the preparation of necessary training programmes for improving the knowledge and skills of the employees working in centres for social work, so they will be able to better respond to the challenges they face daily, especially when it comes to discrimination and its most drastic form – violence.
