During the previous two weeks two women died from family violence, because their partners beat them to death, said the Ombudsman for Gender Equality Gordana Stevanović on 25 November, opening the conference “Comprehensive Approach to Combating Violence against Women” at the National Assembly.
She expressed hope that amendments to laws will enable the more efficient resolution of the issue of family violence and that Serbia will be able to remedy the deficiencies in the work of its institutions to protect victims of violence and punish the offenders.
The police, prosecution, courts and social work centres are key institutions in the prevention of family violence, where the victims are most frequently women, said the Chairman of the Assembly Board for Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality Meho Omerović. The adoption of the Law on the Prevention of Family Violence and amendments to the Criminal Code send a clear message to violent offenders that the state stands by the protection of victims.
