Public administration reform is not treated under a separate chapter in the negotiations with the European Union, but a good part of the general reforms on the road to the EU will depend on reforms of the administration at the state and local level, it was said on 31 March at an event on good governance at the local level. Among the 35 negotiation chapters, 15 will, as it was stated, be in regards to local self-governments, and chapters 22 – regional policy and structural instruments and chapter 11 – agriculture and rural development have been singled out as key to local development. The development of good governance requires openness and regular dialogue between the local self-government, citizens and businesspeople, and founding economic councils at the local level can contribute to this, the event participants assessed.
At the closing conference of the project “Strengthening Good Governance at the Local Level”, state secretary in the Ministry of Public Administration and Local Self-Government, Željko Ožegović, said that citizens are increasingly demanding quality services, and to get involved in the development of local communities.
The project “Strengthening Good Governance at the Local Level” was implemented by the National Alliance for Local Economic Development (NALED) with the support of Finland.
