Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Serbia and President of the Coordination Body for Gender Equality Zorana Mihajlović stated on 27 May that the CEDAW Committee recognized Serbia’s efforts regarding the improvement of gender equality and reduction of discrimination against women.
Mihajlović, opening the conference on the implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) noted that a lot has been done in the legislative and institutional framework, but that it is not enough, since we must be faster and more efficient.
As long as a single woman in Serbia is suffering any form of violence, whether physical, psychological or economic, we cannot be satisfied, she emphasized.
The Director of the UN Women Office in Serbia Milana Rikanović noted that the country has received recommendations that require the engagement of all of society.
Statistics indicate that gender equality has not yet been achieved in our society. We have achieved a lot, and UN Women will continue to support the Coordination Body, the non-government sector, and all other ministries, to appropriately respond to the Committee’s recommendations, she emphasized.
The conference, jointly organized by the Coordination Body for Gender Equality, UN Women in Serbia and the SOS Vojvodina Network, was also attended by the Head of the Office for Human and Minority Rights Suzana Paunović, representatives of the EU Delegation in Serbia, the UN Human Rights Team and civil society organizations.
