Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Serbia and Minister of Public Administration and Local Self-Government, Kori Udovički, stated at the constitutive session of the National Minority Council that Serbia today can proudly state it represents a multiethnic community, with approximately 30 national communities living within its territory, for whom, with respect to the highest international standards, the Constitution guarantees minority rights.
Today, our country can proudly say that it has overcome the greatest challenges of a complex heritage of multiethnic conflicts, she said, and added that the Council, having met after six years, will do everything in its power to provide for the protection of rights and interests we as a society have recognized as special.
The session concluded that working meetings should be held from May to June between line ministers and members of the Council with the national councils of national minorities. The subjects and schedule of the meetings will be proposed by the newly formed Coordination of National Councils of National Minorities, in cooperation with the Office for Human and Minority Rights of the Government of the Republic of Serbia.
The session was chaired by Udovički, with participation by the Minister of Education, Science and Technological Development Srđan Verbić, the Minister of Culture and Information Ivan Tasovac and the state secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Veljko Odalović. Contributions to the work of the session were also provided by the state secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration and Local Self-Government Ivan Bošnjak, representatives of 20 national councils, as well as the Association of Jewish Municipalities of Serbia.
