On 25 July, the Minister of Public Administration and Local Self-government in the Government of the Republic of Serbia, Branko Ružić met with the representatives of national minority councils who presented their work and the most significant challenges they have been facing so far.
Mr Ružić reminded that the Ministry of Public Administration and Local Self-government worked on one of the most important documents in the field of protection of national minority rights – Action Plan for the Realisation of the Rights of National Minorities. The adoption of the Action Plan is envisaged within the process of Serbia’s accession to the EU, or more precisely by the Chapter 23.
He stated that apart from the contribution made by the representatives of public institutions, civil society organisations and international organisations, the creation of this Action Plan was significantly influenced by national minority councils.
The Minister said that national minority councils were expected to continue participating in the implementation of activities, and preparation and monitoring of reports, and thus continue contributing to the improvement of the status of their communities.
Mr Ružić stressed that the national minority councils participated in the drafting of the Law on Amendments to the Law on the Protection of the Rights and Freedoms of National Minorities, as well as that they were actively participating in the preparation of amendments and additions to the Law on National Councils of National Minorities.
