The Serbian Ministry of Justice has reported that the German non-governmental organisation “Help” signed cooperation contracts on 13 June with three institutions for execution of criminal sanctions – the correctional facilities KPZ Sremska Mitrovica and KPZ Niš and the Youth Correctional Institution VPD Kruševac.
The Ministry’s press release states that this meant the continuation of activities towards the improvement of the criminal sanctions execution system and the successful resocialisation and reintegration of convicts in the society.
The wardens of the three correctional facilities said that the project enabled the convicts to be trained in occupations in demand in the labour market, which allowed them to start their own businesses after serving the sentence.
They said that the vocational training using the donated equipment increased the number of persons engaged in work, which contributed to a considerably smaller number of discipline problems and incidents.
As the wardens emphasised, the care of former convicts also influenced a smaller rate of their return to criminal activities, which had decreased from 70 % to 62 % over the past few years.
The value of the project is € 274,000, of which € 50,000 is the contribution from the Budget of the Republic of Serbia. In order to stimulate employment and self-employment of former convicts and their successful reintegration in the society, the project will also provide support for employment of 30 former convicts.
