Association “Atina” and the Centre for the Protection of and Assistance to Asylum Seekers presented the project “Initiating the Dialogue on Mutual Tolerance and Nonviolence between Migrants and Citizens in Local Communities” in April 2014 in Belgrade.
The project aims to initiate a dialogue on tolerance between the local Serbian population and the asylum seekers and to develop mechanisms for solving the problems of asylum seekers in Serbia, as well as persons who are in transit to other countries.
The project was motivated by the fact that asylum seekers in Serbia have been exposed to different forms of violence, including trafficking in human beings.
The number of asylum seekers grows in Serbia – in 2008 there were 44 asylum seekers, while in the last year 2,994 persons have sought asylum – mainly from Syria, Eritrea, Somalia, Afghanistan… Due to many conflicts in the world, there is an upward trend of persons seeking asylum.
