In 2014, representatives of numerous civil society organizations from the Western Balkans and Turkey signed the Belgrade Declaration (http://belgradedeclaration.net/) on the development of social entrepreneurship in the Western Balkans and Turkey, with the intention to contribute to the recognition of importance of this sector for economic and social development. Among the key principles of the Declaration is the need that the EU, the countries of the Western Balkans and Turkey publicly announce their commitment to development of social entrepreneurship and partnership between institutions and civil society, business sector and social entrepreneurship sector in developing social economy.
The declaration was signed in September, during the meeting in which it was pointed out that the countries of the region are faced with similar problems in the sector, such as: insufficient comprehension of the concept, inability to distinguish this sector from civil society organizations (CSOs), inadequate regulations and delays in the adoption of relevant laws, problems in funding and institutional support.
The Belgrade Declaration has been approved by more than 200 NGOs and social enterprises so far.
