By decision of the Academic Council of the Faculty of Philology of the University in Belgrade on 15 April 2015, the teaching of the Roma language is included in the basic academic studies of this higher education institution, while as part of the Center for Professional Development and Evaluation, the Faculty will organize Roma language courses, thereby enabling graduate teachers to gain diplomas on knowledge of the Roma language and get involved in regular teaching in primary and secondary schools where the subject Roma Language with Elements of National Culture is taught.
The Roma language thus gained equal status as all other national minority languages with instruction organized at the Faculty of Philology in Belgrade. These decisions create the conditions for the development and standardization of the Roma language, the preservation of the cultural identity of Roma and a higher quality education of students of Roma nationality.
This procedure at the Faculty of Philology was initiated by experts from the Center for Ethnicity Research, and supported by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development.
