The Director of the Office for IT and e-Governance of the Government of the Republic of Serbia Mihailo Jovanović presented on 7 December, in the presence of the Ambassador of the United Kingdom Denis Keefe and the Head of the World Bank Office in Serbia Stephen Ndegwe, diplomas for champions in the field of open data.
A total of 10 diplomas were presented, with five going to civil society organizations whose projects in the field of open data were selected for financing with a total fund of US$ 60,000.
The remaining five diplomas were presented to public administration bodies that have opened their datasets, publishing them on the national open data portal and defining challenges for proposing innovative ideas with the aim of improving their own work.
The civil society organization projects were awarded at a public call issued under the programme “Open Data – Open Opportunities” financed by the World Bank, Good Governance Fund of the UK Government, and the Swedish International Development and Cooperation Agency, implemented by UNDP and the Office for IT and e-Governance.
Numerous results of importance for the process of opening data in Serbia have been achieved during the past year, from the opening of the national open data portal, through the adoption of the Law on e-Government, introducing open data into the legislative framework, to establishing a broad community of those publishing and using open data.
Jovanović noted that the national open data portal today counts 28 institutions, publishing 393 files grouped under 116 open data sets.
He said that three open data challenges have also been issued, with a fund of US$ 30,000, formulated by five state institutions.
According to him, the process of opening data is very significant for the openness and transparency of the Government, improved communication with citizens, and the inclusion of citizens in the process of adopting policies and improving public services.
