In March, the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE) published the “Economic Benefits of Gender Equality in the EU” survey. The survey, performed by EIGE, presents new data which indicate positive effects of gender inequality reduction in certain areas such as science, technology engineering and mathematics (STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), labour market activity and income.
Using the econometric model for assessing a wide range of macro-economic benefits of gender equality in several areas such as education, income and labour market activity, the survey has shown that greater gender equality would lead to:
- Between 6.3 and 10.5 million additional job positions by 2050. About 70% of these jobs would be taken by women, however female and male employment rates meet in the long run, reaching an 80% employment rate by 2050;
- An increase, by 2050, in EU (GDP) per capita by 6.1 to 9.6%, which amounts to EUR 1.95 to EUR 3.15 trillion.
