The International Round-table on Education for Refugee Children and Youth, Migrants, and Asylum-seekers was held on 1 December in Belgrade in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development, Centre for Educational Policy, Kultur Kontakt Austria, and UNICEF.
The participants of the round-table were the members of the Working Group of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development for the support to the education for refugees and migrants, which is, apart from the representatives of relevant sectors within the Ministry, composed of representatives from the Institute for the Improvement of Education and the Institute for Education Quality and Evaluation, school management, school mentors, Danish Refugee Council, Kultur Kontakt Austria, Youth College, Institute for Talent Development from Austria, Centre for Educational Policy, UNICEF office in Serbia and Bulgaria.
The participants had the opportunity to analyse the experiences from Austria regarding different ways young people, who did not attend school, could exercise their right to education, for example through programmes for learning foreign languages and acquiring basic skills and social competencies which would prepare them for further vocational training for professions which are in demand.
Through the experiences of Bulgaria and Serbia, the participants presented the impact that the inclusion of refugee and migrant children had on further improvement of the education system, both on the legal framework and practical work, and especially on the development of programmes designed for teaching the language in which the school curriculum was taught as a second language, as well as on focusing the educational practice on acquiring key competencies and enabling the organisation of teaching and learning to become more flexible.
The participants from other countries expressed their gratitude for the learning opportunity provided to them, and especially for the experiences shared by the Republic of Serbia.
