Representatives of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development and representatives of national councils of national minorities in the Republic of Serbia held discussions on 19 April on the new legislative framework currently being drafted. Ideas and suggestions were exchanged at the meeting, regarding the parts of the law related to national minority education.
The meeting was attended by Minister Mladen Šarčević, State Secretary Anamarija Viček, Assistant Minister for Legal Affairs Aleksandar Marković and 17 representatives of national councils of national minorities. The representatives of national councils of national minorities presented proposals for solutions that could be included in the new legislative framework and expressed satisfaction with the fact that certain proposals are already included in the draft laws. Some of the proposals that could be heard at the meeting included the improvement of the process of adopting curricula, more efficient work on approving textbooks in minority languages and reduction of the minimum number of students required to form a group for the subject of native language with elements of national culture from the current 15 to 10.
State Secretary Anamarija Viček noted the constant efforts made by the Ministry to improve teaching in national minority languages, as well as the need for the amount of funds for textbooks in national minority languages to be expanded to textbooks in 14 languages and dialects of national minorities. The national councils should submit to the Ministry written requests for textbooks by the end of April, in order to draft memoranda during May for new ones and annexes for existing textbooks, with printing to be implemented by the Institute for Textbooks before the start of the new school year, notes Viček.
