The European Union’s support to gender equality policy implementation and the presentation of the new methodology for developing the Gender Equality Index featured as the two principal topics of the two-day conference organised on 1–2 June by the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE) with the representatives of the Western Balkan countries and Turkey.
Gordana Gavrilović, Gender Equality Advisor to the Deputy Prime Minister, presented Serbia’s achievements in this area to her counterparts from the Institute and the regional countries.
“Serbia is an example of good practice in the Western Balkans. Besides adopting the National Strategy for Gender Equality and the accompanying Action Plan, we have introduced gender responsive budgeting, developed the Index, passed the Law on the Prevention of Domestic Violence, as well as the new Action Plan for Implementation of the Security Council Resolution 1325 – Women, Peace and Security”, said Ms Gavrilović.
Speaking about the Gender Equality Index in Serbia, Jovana Djindjić, Gender Equality and Human Rights Coordinator at the Social Inclusion and Poverty Reduction Unit of the Serbian Government, reminded the participants that Serbia was the only country outside of the EU that had developed the Gender Equality Index.
“The results of the previous Index helped us in the creation of gender equality policies. Now we are starting the development of the new Index, in order to measure the achievements we have had thus far, as well as to improve the areas in which women are at a disadvantage”, said Ms Djindjić.
