On 17 August, the Minister of Public Administration and Local Self-government in the Government of the Republic of Serbia, Branko Ružić, announced the elections for national councils of national minorities which will be held on 4 November, and invited all representatives of national minorities in our country to exercise their right to vote and register themselves in the Special Voters Registry.
In 2018, the national council members will be elected by 22 national minority groups, out of which 18 national minorities have fulfilled the requirements for direct elections (Albanian, Ashkali, Bosnian, Bulgarian, Bunjevac, Vlach, Greek, Egyptian, Hungarian, German, Polish, Roma, Romanian, Ruthenian, Slovak, Slovenian, Ukrainian and Czech), and four for electoral assembly elections (Macedonian, Croatian, Montenegrin and Russian).
Regular elections for members of national councils of national minorities are held every four years.
A national council has minimum 15, and maximum 35 members. If according to the results of the last census, a particular national minority has fewer than 10 thousand persons, the number of members in the national council will be 15. If on the other hand, the national minority has more than one hundred thousand persons, the number of national council members will be 35.
