Trade union activity of women is essential for improving their position in the society, especially in the area of labour and employment, said Brankica Janković, Commissioner for Protection of Equality, at the opening of the “Empowering the Women from the Regional Trade Union Council ‘Solidarity’” event. The Commissioner’s experiences indicate that most reported cases of discrimination pertain to this particular area.
Coordinator Emilija Grujić presented the cooperation project between the European Trade Union Confederation and the Regional Network ‘Solidarity, stressing that, besides youth, women were the most vulnerable group in the labour market.
Confederal Secretary of the European Trade Union Confederation Montserrat Mir Roca warned that governments of some European countries constantly diminished the importance of human rights and social justice.
She presented the Action plan for the next period which foresees raising employment levels, equal representation of both sexes and equalization of wages. She placed special emphasis on the need to create policies that would generate the best solutions for upcoming challenges – the increasing number of elderly people and the ways to ensure a stable pension system.
