As part of the education component of the Erasmus+ programme, numerous cooperation programmes within various programme activities have been approved, with implementation starting as of the 2015/2016 school year. During the first call for mobility projects in higher education, Serbia received around 40% of the total funds earmarked for the Western Balkans, and with around 230 projects it is by far in the lead according to the number of approved projects for international mobility. These projects envisage for students and employees of higher education institutions to spend a certain time in higher education institutions in EU member states, Turkey, Norway, Lichtenstein, Macedonia and Island, studying and/or working and exchanging experiences.
As part of the capacity building projects in higher education, a total of 14 projects were approved for the Western Balkans region with a budget of over EUR 12 million, with 6 projects coordinated by Western Balkans institutions. These projects involve support to the development of research capacities for higher education in the region, establishing an institutional framework for developing the third mission of universities in Serbia, the development of new study programmes regarding waste management, geodesy, as well as the development of short cycle studies. Under the part of the programme regarding Jean Monet projects, the University Academy of Economy in Novi Sad received financing to implement one module. In addition to this, currently there are four active Jean Monet projects in Serbia, namely at the University of Belgrade, University of Arts in Belgrade, University in Niš and University in Novi Sad.
