The European Union has decided to set aside €120 million to provide free wireless internet to 8,000 municipalities in the EU areas with no internet coverage by year 2020. The scheme will fund free Wi-Fi in public squares, parks, hospitals and other indoor and outdoor public spaces.
The WiFi4EU initiative will be financed from the current €1 trillion EU budget for the period 2014–2020 and it will be open to any local entity with a public mission – typically local municipalities, but also libraries and health centres.
The funds earmarked for this scheme will finance the purchase of equipment and the installation costs, said the European Commission.
