An agreement was signed in Brussels on 17 December on the use of EUR 97 million from the EU assistance programme to Serbia for preparations for membership (IPA), with 49.6 million intended for the construction of an intergas connector between Serbia and Bulgaria, and around 29 million for environmental protection in several towns across Serbia. The money will also be used for participation in EU programmes – COSME, Horizon 2020, Erasmus+.
The agreement was signed by the Serbian Minister for European Integration Jadranka Joksimović and the European Commissioner Johannes Hahn, Emphasizing in particular that the gas connector with Bulgaria will strengthen the independence and provision of Serbia with fuel from diverse sources. (…) This is one of the most important projects that should support, primarily, the power supply of Serbia from various sources and directions, and the stability in the supply and strengthening of infrastructure.
Another important project financed by the EU through grants is the “project of environmental protection in the broadest sense”, as noted by Minister Joksimović, i.e. the waste water treatment plant in Kruševac, Brus, Blace. The IPA fund will provide funds for environmental protection projects in 19 municipalities in our country, said the Minister for European Integration, noting that these are important projects “showing to our citizens at the local level what European integration projects mean”.
Commissioner Hahn added that the money from IPA funds is also given for securing potable water in Kraljevo, Kruševac and Trstenik, and that funds for the treatment of waste water mean an improvement in the living conditions of Serbian citizens based on European values.
