The European Parliament adopted four annual reports on candidate countries and potential candidates from the Western Balkans area. The reports, inter alia, assessed progress in achieving the rights of the LGBTI population, providing recommendations to these countries on improving the status in this area.
The report for Serbia commends the successful Pride Parade in September 2014, after it was forbidden three years in a row.
Ulrike Lunacek, member of the European Parliament and co-chair of the Intergroup for LGBTI rights expressed her concern over the fact that adverse behavior and violence against the LGBTI community remain a problem: “Equal rights for all, including LGBTI persons, represent an important property of an inclusive, democratic and tolerant society. Still, I am glad to see that numerous (potential) candidate countries are diligently working on securing human rights for the LGBTI population, in accordance with European values.”
