EU Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development, Neven Mimica, announced the first ever EU comprehensive Human Rights Defenders Mechanism. The initiative is set to become one of Europe’s key tools to assist human rights defenders exposed to significant risks as well as for those in remote areas.
The budget for the mechanism until 2018 is estimated at €15 million from the EU funds. These funds complement the continuing support for Human Rights Defenders, provided amongst others, through the European Instrument for Democracy and Human Rights. Since 2007, this Instrument has allocated €200 million to Human Rights Defenders worldwide.
