In light of increasing fears due to the rise of income inequality and its negative economic and social effects, on 7 September the World Economic Forum (WEF) published the first report on inclusive growth in the world aiming to re-examine the efforts to accelerate economic growth to improve the living standards of all of society. The survey of achievements in combating inequality encompassed Serbia as well, seventh according to the criterion of education and skills and only 20th according to the basic services and infrastructure criterion in its group of countries with higher medium income.
The report Inclusive Growth and Development, the first of its kind by the forum, showed that all 112 countries encompassed by the survey missed the opportunities to reduce income inequality without damaging economic growth.
The goal of the report is to indicate how countries could make use of a wide spectrum of policies and institutional mechanisms to make economic growth more socially inclusive without holding back initiatives for growth, savings and investments.
The countries encompassed by the survey were divided into four groups – advanced, those with higher middle and lower middle income, and countries with low income. Country performance was assessed under seven key dimensions with a total of 140 indicators.
Serbia is in the group of 26 countries with higher middle income including Croatia, Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania, Poland and Turkey, as well as China, Russia, Brazil and Mexico.
