During the past year Serbia regressed slightly regarding gender equality, dropping three places, to 48th place among 144 countries, as published by the World Economic Forum (WEF). The most gender-equitable country in the world for the eighth time in a row is Iceland, and the most unequal is once again Yemen, as shown by the Forum’s Global Gender Equality Index for 2016.
Regarding the criterion of economic equality of women and men, Serbia is in 70th place globally, regarding healthcare it is at 76, in the domain of education at 49, while regarding women’s representation in politics it is at 42.
The gender equality gap in Serbia is lower than in other countries in the region, with Albania at 62 on the global list, Croatia 68, Macedonia 73, Bosnia and Herzegovina 83, and Montenegro 89.
The Forum states that the goal of the global report on gender equality is to show whether countries distribute their resources and opportunities equally to women and men. The report measures the gender inequality gap across four categories with numerous criteria.
