State Secretary of the Ministry of the Interior of the Government of the Republic of Serbia Biljana Popović Ivković announced on 16 April that new measures will be introduced as part of the “Improvement of Women’s Safety in Serbia” project for protecting victims of domestic violence – a system of bracelets for victims and perpetrators of violence.
Speaking at a meeting regarding the start of the above project Popović Ivković explained that the bracelets will be connected to police administrations so that victims could rapidly signal that they are in danger, and so that police can react immediately.
She noted that the “Improving Women’s Safety” project, to be implemented partly within the Ministry of the Interior through the UN Women organization and with financial support by the Kingdom of Norway, represents a new phase in combating this kind of violence.
The Ambassador of the Kingdom of Norway in Belgrade Arne Sannes Bjørnstad expressed his belief that this project, based on prevention through the use of new electronic methods and a change in mentality, will be successful.
The Head of the UN Women Office Milana Rikanović noted that this new innovative project aims to establish a situation without violence, and without gender stereotypes.
Speaking about the new technology, Rikanović said that the project will start testing a pilot project of bracelets for victims and perpetrators of violence, enabling police officers to monitor in real time when perpetrators violate restraining orders.
She said that women in rural areas report violence less, meaning that they may not have access to information and support systems, therefore the project will work directly with them.
The “Improving Women’s Safety in Serbia” project, implemented by the UN Women organization in cooperation with the Ministry of the Interior and with the support of the Kingdom of Norway, will last for three years.
