During the opening of the space for young people leaving youth detention centres, the Centre for Criminal Prevention and Post-Penal Assistance – NEOSTART presented the “Make yourself literate – Change!” project which will be implemented in this newly opened space by using literacy as a way to reintegrate this group of young people back into the Serbian society.
The experience of the organisation working with this population shows that the majority of those who left detention centres has difficulties with functional literacy, and is often completely illiterate. NEOSTART wanted to create a model for helping them become literate.
The opening of the space and the presentation of the project was attended by the representatives of the Higher Court in Belgrade – Juvenile Department, the Institute for Criminological and Sociological Research, the OSCE in Serbia, the Directorate for Execution of Criminal Sanctions, Erste Bank, Dokukino Foundation, DobroČiniTi Initiative, IAN Organisation and the Youth Initiative for Human Rights.
