The Director of the Office for Human and Minority Rights of the Government of the Republic of Serbia Suzana Paunović, speaking at the second meeting of the Network for Roma Issues held on 30 May, said that the towns and municipalities in Serbia engage 76 coordinators for Roma issues.
Some of their tasks are in regards to communication and mediation between the Roma community and local administration and the provision of support to civil society organizations working in the inclusion and improvement of the Roma community at the local level. Likewise, they work on improving the intersectoral cooperation of pedagogical assistants, healthcare mediators with representatives of social work centres, branches of the National Employment Service and civil society organizations. Coordinators also provide support to the local self-government in developing and implementing Roma inclusion policies and programmes in accordance with national and local strategic frameworks.
The Office for Human and Minority Rights supported the work of the Association of Roma Coordinators, gathering 44 coordinators for Roma issues, with every coordinator having completed training in various areas. Paunović said that the Office also supported the work of the Network for Roma Issues founded by SCTM as part of the project “Strengthening the Role of Local Roma Coordinators in Local Self-Governments in Serbia”. Members of the Network are 83 local self-governments with 113 members, with the network envisaged to expand further.
