The Network of Organizations for Children of Serbia (MODS) approves the intention of the Government of the Republic of Serbia to advance the support measures for “equal and righteous treatment of all parents”, as stated in the release of the Ministry of Finance.
In order to realize this, the abolishment of VAT for the baby equipment must be compensated completely within the parental allowances, as stated, during the first year of a child’s life. The amount should be at least equal to the average amount of money a family can realize by refunding VAT during two years.
Accordingly all parents will be truly treated equally, which was the goal of the initiative for the abolishment of VAT for baby equipment in 2012. MODS reminds us that the measure of refunding VAT for babies was greatly supported by citizens and that 180.000 people signed the petition for the abolishment of VAT for baby food and equipment.
In the process of implementing the announced changes, MODS appeals to the Government of the Republic of Serbia to have in mind the facts that on one hand Serbia is a leader in the region as far as the prices of equipment, food and clothes for babies and children are concerned but on the other hand it is a leader in respect of the children poverty risk rate in relation to 28 EU member countries (30 percentages towards 20,8 percentages).
