The National Association of Parents of Children Suffering from Cancer NURDOR, with significant support by Red Cross Belgrade, organized a camp for families having lost their children due to these malignant diseases – the first camp of its kind in Serbia.
NURDOR gathered 32 parents, 16 children and one grandmother between 30 September and 6 October in the warm atmosphere of the Maljen Hotel in Divčibare. The idea of the “Hand of Hope” camp was to provide support for the families. The goal of the organizer was to empower the spousal dyad and the entire family, to remind them that the greatest strength lies precisely within the family, but also to mutually connect the families in the camp in order to continue providing support to each other even after the camp.
Since the pain faced by families after the loss of their child is enormous and frequently carries with it a number of psychological challenges, the key part of the camp were daily psychological workshops for parents. Throughout the workshop for parents, children were busy with creative, sports-recreational and entertaining activities, with experienced and trained NURDOR volunteers. The families particularly liked the joint activities, organized field trips, walks, sports and recreational activities, cinema and other relaxing activities.
