The European Commission has launched the competition for the European Green Capital 2021 (EGCA 2021) and European Green Leaf 2020 (EGLA 2020) awards. The EGCA is awarded as recognition of ecological achievements of European cities (with more than 100 thousand inhabitants). The aim of the award is to inspire citizens to take positive action in order to improve living conditions in their communities. The EGLA is given to towns and cities with the population between 20 and 100 thousand inhabitants, because of their potential to act as “green ambassadors” for smaller cities.
EGCA 2021 and EGLA 2020 winners receive many benefits including, a greater focus on environmental projects, international media coverage, increased tourism and foreign investment, boosting the local economy and helping to create employment. EGCA and EGLA winners and shortlisted cities also gain access to the exclusive EGCA and EGLA networks, thus receiving the support and a platform for sharing knowledge and best practice. Previous applicants have highlighted that even the application process itself proved to be beneficial with regard to the evaluation of the progress and designing future plans, as well as obtaining expert advice on how to improve the approach in ecological practice.
The deadline for applications is 18 October 2018, and for more information go to www.skgo.org
