The final conference of the project “Overcoming Inequality: Combating Discrimination and Hate Crime against Roma in Serbia” was held at the Media Centre in Belgrade on November 30.
Ljiljana Lončar, Assistant to the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality, reminded those present of the prevalence of discrimination against the Roma, indicating cases of discrimination in the fields of employment, hate speech and disturbing and humiliating behaviour towards those who belong to this vulnerable minority group and for which complaints procedures were conducted before this authority or strategic litigations were initiated.
The lack of an adequate reaction by competent institutions, primarily police, prosecution and courts in the cases of physical assault, police torture and material damage occurring during an incident motivated by hate towards persons of the Roma minority, is especially concerning.
