On the occasion of the International Children’s Day, on 1 June, Minister without Portfolio in the Government of the Republic of Serbia in charge of demographics and population policy Slavica Đukić Dejanović stated that violence and poverty are the greatest challenges faced by children in Serbia.
According to the interrupted childhood parameters, she warns, Serbia holds a high 41st place among 170 countries, and analyses show that many children even drop out of their mandatory education, while some are exposed to severe physical labour and violence.
She noted that the issue of violence against children, poverty and the rights of the child will be the purview of the Council for the Rights of the Child.
The Director of the UNICEF office in Serbia Michel Saint-Lot noted that it is important to provide quality healthcare and education available to children in Serbia.
There is a will in the Government of Serbia to improve the status of children, as evidenced by the reduced number of children without parental care in institutions, as well as the fact that children from impoverished families will not pay for preschool institutions, he said. Furthermore, he added, allocations for children with developmental impairments have been doubled.
