The state secretary of the Ministry of Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Affairs, Nenad Ivanišević, stated on 26 February that there is noticeable progress in the sector of child protection reform in Serbia, but that there are still children who are left out. This, along with a chronic lack of funds, the bureaucracy and slow changes in awareness, indicates the need for further caution.
Ivanišević, speaking at the roundtable “Multinational UNICEF Evaluation: Achievements in the Field of Reform of Child Protection Systems 2005–2012“, noted that the number of children in institutions is reduced, strengthening the role of family accommodation and social service centers.
He stated that the child mortality rate for under three year olds declined seriously, fewer children are born with HIV, an increasing number of kids remain in their biological families, have an improved access to the educational system, and the number of those in prison due to conflicts with the law is decreasing.
