“Nearly 16 million women in South-Eastern Europe suffer some form of violence, whether physical, psychological or economic. The greatest percentage is psychological violence, therefore it is important to work more on educating girls and women to recognize all forms of violence and to create a path for leaving this hell, because it is a serious threat for them and society as a whole”, said Deputy Prime Minister of Serbia and President of the Coordination Body for Gender Equality Prof. Dr Zorana Mihajlović on 18 April.
Opening the conference where the results of the OSCE study on the welfare and safety of women were presented, she noted that this study provides guidelines and recommendations that will make the decision we make in combating violence against women better and more efficient.
The Deputy Prime Minister also added that we need to have broad, regional social activities and to make certain decisions jointly in the region, changing the awareness of men and women regarding violence, since it is a problem that affects us all, as demonstrated by the OSCE survey.
Andrea Orizio, Head of the OSCE Mission to Serbia, said that during the past three years the OSCE Mission to Serbia had an active role in the inclusion of all interested local stakeholders, including the Government, independent institutions, civil society, academic community, and the media, to strengthen local governance during the drafting and implementation of the Study on the Welfare and Safety of Women, implemented by OSCE.
