Based on a call by civil society organizations, the members of the European Parliament supported the Rodriguez Report on the need for empowerment through the education of girls in the EU at the plenary vote held on 8 September this year.
The report proposes the introduction of measures to secure that all national educational systems promote gender equality and aid the development of skills for girls, so that as a final goal they would improve their personal and professional development.
In addition to equal access to education for girls and boys, regardless of their socio-economic status, cultural origin or religion, the Report calls on member states to implement educational measures aimed at:
- Influencing the fight against gender stereotypes (in media, advertising, textbooks, etc.) often reflected on the image girls and boys develop about themselves, health, the acquisition of skills and professional life,
- Stimulating girls and boys in interests outside those stereotypically assigned to them,
- Educating for equality, to develop self-confidence and independence in decision making both for girls and boys,
- Educating about sexuality and relationships based on equality, gender awareness. Adapting curricula to the age and providing information required to make the right decisions and prevent unwanted pregnancy, mother and infant mortality at birth, as well as combat sexually transmitted diseases,
- Developing awareness in girls and young women of having control over their bodies,
- Monitoring homophobic and transphobic intimidation and discrimination based on gender or sexual identity.
Ensured access to education for girls is no longer enough. Public education is required that can help girls and young women become individual citizens fully enjoying their social, economic, cultural and political rights. Education must be an efficient tool helping girls and boys create the career they want and have freedom of choice both in their professional, as well as sexual lives.
