Due to frequent fires within the Roma settlements which has taken the lives of 12 children in the last few years, 22 settlements in 10 different municipalities in the South of Serbia will receive fire extinguishers and the Roma will be trained how to use them starting from next week.
“Protect yourself” (“Arak tut”) is a project designed to increase safety in Roma settlements concerning fire protection, it has been implemented by the “Yurom Centre” from Niš, with the support of the European PROGRES. The firefighting equipment will be installed in Roma settlements in Žitorađa, Prokuplje, Kuršumlija, Leskovac, Bojnik, Lebane, Vladičin Han, Surdulica, Vranje and Bujanovac.
Apart from fire extinguishers, there will be training for a group of volunteers – firefighters from Roma settlements that will later be integrated into volunteer fire brigades. Also, residents will receive educational materials, and they will be shown a film about how to react in case of a fire.
The project to increase safety in Roma settlements regarding fire protection is funded by the European Union, the Swiss Confederation and the Government of the Republic of Serbia through the European PROGRES Programme.
